The Last Couple
I've been slacking, and haven't provided you all with the lastest on the Mite 1 Mustang team's exploits...
Back before new year's, on December 30th, the Mustangs won a very hard fought (i.e. Rough) game against Parma with a 1-0 decision. Wyatt scored the loan goal by either team in the first period, and our boys just shut down Parma with great defense and driving their shots and routes to the boards, so that very few had good angles to the net. Christian got the win and shutout. This got us to a 4-4-0 record in the division and 8 points.
Saturday morning we planned a Parents/Coaches versus kids game during our normal practice time. Now, I've skated at open skates and such and I played a bit of FLOOR hockey back in my younger days, but I never have put the two together, until Saturday. Oh boy, I now know why I DON'T play this game myself. I don't have the cardiovascular strength to be out there and up and down the ice for very long periods at all. I have a new found respect for the boys and how much they do and how long they are out there at a time working and working. The other dads and coaches who have or still do play allowed me to borrow some equipment as I was only bringing skates and a second had VERY WOOD stick to the game.
If you look at photos 2 and 7 in this album you'll get an idea of my get-up (you gotta like the jersey though, eh? Which one do you think I'm wearing?) I'll see if Kath has some more of just me to get you a better idea.
We had a great time and the game was pretty close with some really nice shots taken at both ends. I was even around the net on a few and may have helped at least get the puck to a scorer at one point.
Sunday afternoon we played an exhibition game against Geauga, the coaches gave a few different looks on the ice and wanted to see how some of the boys did at unfamiliar positions, we even had Jack play the game between the pipes, and he did an admirable job, really looking like a goalie with the moves and all. They fell behind 2-0 in the first period, then Patrick scored a nice goal in the second, but we still faced a 3-1 deficit after 2. Patrick scored another in the third, and the Joey put a nice one in from straight up the middle. This got the score to 3-3. Geauga scored their 4th with around a minute left, so we pulled our goalie after that for an extra attacker, we did keep some pressure down in our offensive end, but couldn't find the shot to knot it back up. There were quite a few penalties called in this game (in very stark contrast the the totally non-penalty game against Parma - and there should have been some...) but still quite a few blatant things that should have been called as well.
This weekend the boy's schedule has them meeting up with Wooster on Saturday afternoon for their second divisional game with them this year, then quite early Sunday we drive over to Kent State U, for a "home" game against the team from Youngstown.
